Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
Read: 11.06.15
Atypical from popular dystopian novels, Never Let Me Go is set in a plausible future where the moral boundaries of science are challenged. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the book consistently holds a theme of art vs. science— in a way you would not expect it to. It had me confused and curious from beginning to end, but it’s the pace at which Ishiguro chooses to answer my questions that kept me hooked.
Ishiguro’s calm but intense style is the root of many paradoxical impressions throughout the text. The general atmosphere can only be described as eerily unusual yet realistic at the same time. Much of the descriptions depict small cues in facial expressions and body languages we recognize in everyday life, which believe me, will have you absolutely absorbed in this book. Ishiguro’s translation of human instinct into words is so deliberately smooth, but I can’t (or infer) why without ruining the surprise. Just make sure you don’t read any spoilers before trying this book out.
